NCAA Upholds Sorsby’s Ineligibility for 2026 Football Season Despite His Legal Challenge

(AsiaGameHub) –   The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has rejected Brendan Sorsby’s appeal to be reinstated for the 2026 college football season. This decision follows his suspension for sports betting, which reportedly involved placing wagers on a game in which he participated.

NCAA Confirms Earlier Ruling on Sorsby

According to NCAA regulations concerning sports wagering, student-athletes are prohibited from placing bets on either professional or collegiate athletic events. Should they be discovered to have wagered on their own team or any other sport associated with their institution, they risk permanent loss of eligibility.

Subsequent to the NCAA’s initial ruling to suspend Sorsby, he initiated legal action against the governing body, seeking his reinstatement to participate in the 2026 college football season. In documents submitted to the court, Sorsby admitted to making thousands of bets across various sports. These wagers encompassed bets on Indiana football games during the 2022 season, a period when he was a redshirt freshman at the university.

Sorsby asserted that he never placed wagers on any game in which he personally played, maintaining that his betting activities did not undermine the integrity of the sport. He claimed his bets involving the Hoosiers were restricted to predicting the team’s victory or the strong performance of his teammates. He characterized this betting as a coping strategy, enabling him to feel a connection to a team for which he was not actively competing.

Texas Tech, Sorsby’s most recent team, has publicly backed its quarterback and is currently appealing the NCAA’s ruling. Lawrence Schovanec, the university’s president, commented that with the nationwide legalization and rapid growth of sports betting, gambling addiction has become increasingly common, particularly among male college students.

Schovanec further noted that the NCAA’s declared objectives encompass nurturing the enduring well-being of student-athletes and cultivating an environment of support for their mental health. He highlighted that gambling addiction is acknowledged as a clinical behavioral disorder.

Sorsby Speaks Out After NCAA Upholds Ruling

Echoing Schovanec’s sentiments, Sorsby recently concluded a 35-day rehabilitation program addressing gambling addiction. Through an Instagram post, he conveyed his acceptance of responsibility for his conduct. He also shared that, for the first time in years, he experienced a feeling of liberation and no longer felt entirely dominated by his addiction.

Sorsby additionally conveyed his appreciation to everyone who offered him support over the preceding weeks, including his family, friends, the personnel and experts at Algamus Recovery Services, and the Texas Tech community. He further indicated that, with the backing of his coaches, teammates, and the university, he anticipated his return to the campus in Lubbock.
