(AsiaGameHub) – Following the controversy surrounding Texas Tech player Brendan Sorsby, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) has become the inaugural conference to mandate sports betting education for student-athletes, with a curriculum centered on responsible wagering and the prevention of gambling addiction.
College Students Need to Be Educated Better on Gambling Risks
Sorsby drew significant attention in May when it was revealed that he had been consistently placing bets on various sporting events, including contests in which he participated, a habit he characterized as a way of “feeling more connected to the game.”
There was minimal proof suggesting Sorsby intended to leverage inside information for financial gain. In a legal challenge brought against the NCAA regarding his suspension, counsel for Sorsby argued that the organization was penalizing him for an addiction—a recognized mental health condition—rather than providing the necessary support and intervention.
In response, the SEC is taking proactive measures by requiring all student-athletes to complete a sports betting educational program prior to their participation in the 2026/2027 season.
SEC Says Student-Athletes Need to Comply with New Policy to Play
The conference aims to use this initiative to reduce the dangers linked to student-athlete gambling, which could potentially compromise the integrity of collegiate sports. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey stated:
“The growth of sports wagering, highlighted by recent well-publicized incidents across collegiate and professional sports, alongside the emergence of prediction markets, has made this a top-tier priority for the Southeastern Conference.”
Collegiate athletics are facing intense examination, as susceptible athletes may be tempted to wager themselves and are increasingly targeted by criminal organizations seeking to manipulate game outcomes for profit through proposition bets placed on both regulated and offshore platforms.
